Refund Policies

General Information

There is a 100% refund if courses are dropped before the semester begins. Students who officially withdraw completely from the university will be reimbursed according to the following schedule:

First Week: 100%
Second Week: 80%
Third Week: 60%
Fourth Week: 50%
Fifth Week: 40%
Sixth Week and after: No refund due

Room and Board refunds are pro-rated weekly according to the actual usage of services. Federal guidelines for the pro-rating of student financial aid awards to students who totally withdraw from the university partway through a term usually do not coincide with the above refund policy. Students contemplating withdrawal from the university should first contact the Student Enrollment Center to discuss the impact on their financial aid. Any balance due will become immediately payable to the university.

Refunds are not given on individual course withdrawals after the end of the drop period.

Return of Title IV Funds Policy

The Office of Financial Aid is required by federal statute to recalculate federal financial aid eligibility for students who withdraw, drop out, are dismissed or take a leave of absence prior to completing 60% of a payment period or term. The federal Title IV financial aid programs must be recalculated in the situations.  Federal Title IV programs include Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants (SEOG), Federal Perkins Loans, Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, Graduate PLUS Loans and Federal Parent (PLUS) Loans.

If a student leaves the institution prior to completing 60% of the payment period the financial aid office recalculates eligibility for Title IV funds. Recalculation is based on the percentage of aid earned using the following Return of

Title IV funds formula: 

Percentage of payment period completed equals the number of days completed up to the withdrawal date divided by the total days in the payment period.  (Any break of five or more days is not counted as of the days in the payment period.)

Funds are returned to the appropriate programs based on the percentage of unearned aid using the following formula: 

Federal Title IV aid to be returned equals (100% of the aid that could be disbursed minus the percentage of earned aid) multiplied by the total amount of the aid that could be disbursed during the payment period.

If a student earned less aid than what was disbursed, the institution would be required to return a portion of the funds and the student would be required to a return a portion of the funds. If the school is returning Title IV funds, the student may owe the balance to the institution.

If a student earned more aid than was disbursed to his/her account, the institution would owe the student a post-withdrawal disbursement which must be applied within 120 days of the student's withdrawal.

Refunds of Title IV aid are allocated in the following order:

Unsubsidized Federal Direct Loans

Subsidized Federal Direct Loans

Federal Perkins Loans

Federal Direct PLUS (Parent) Loans

Federal Pell Grants for which a return of funds is required

Federal Supplemental Opportunity Grants for which a return is required

Other assistance under Title IV for which a refund is required


 



Housing

A student who officially withdraws completely from the university PRIOR to the beginning of any semester is eligible to receive a full refund of housing fees, but must forfeit the housing reservation deposit/fee.

A student who officially withdraws completely from the university DURING the semester will forfeit the housing reservation deposit/fee but is entitled to receive a prorated refund of housing fees, based upon a weekly scale.

If a student is asked to leave university housing, the details concerning a housing refund shall be determined by the director of housing. The university shall always retain the authority to allow exceptions to this policy.

Meals

A student who officially withdraws after the beginning of a semester and who notifies the Student Enrollment Center will be entitled to a refund of the board paid for the remainder of the semester. A student who withdraws during a week will be charged for the entire week.

Summer Session

Refunds of fees for a student who withdraws on the first and second day of class is calculated at 100%. There are no refunds after the second day of class due to the intense nature of summer sessions. A portion or all of a student’s aid may be returned to the lender based on the withdrawal as it was not fully earned. The amount due will then become the responsibility of the student. We strongly urge students who receive any aid, who are considering withdrawing from a course or courses to speak to a Financial Aid counselor to confirm the implications of a withdrawal.
