Program Features

Screening into the major will be by audition and/or meeting with adviser in the area of concentration

Required Core Courses

(21 credits):

Co-requisites:

Any (9) credits in ART and any (9) credits in THTR

Senior Seminar

Consists of a major recital (Applied Music concentration majors and/or Jazz Studies concentration majors) a lecture-presentation conducting experience with one or more of the university ensembles (to include program notes), or a research project (Music Theory/History/Literature majors and/or Jazz Studies concentration majors not doing a recital).

All students are required to pass a basic piano proficiency consisting of:

• One prepared piece equivalent to a late beginner level of Anna Magdeline Book of Piano Literature
• One sight-reading piece equivalent to a standard hymn

Completing two semesters of piano class (MUS 110 and MUS 111) with a grade of “C” or better will fulfill this requirement.

Additional Requirements:

Students must have a minimum:

• QPA of 2.5 in MUS courses
• 12 credits in MUS courses at the 300-400 level
• 18 credits in MUS course completed at East Stroudsburg University

Applied Music Concentration (48 credits)

21 credits of core music credits

12 credits of applied music

15 credits from the following electives:

All students are required to participate in a major performing ensemble each semester. Piano majors may fulfill this requirement by serving as an accompanist for major performing ensembles and/or recitals.

Jazz Studies Concentration (48 credits)

21 credits of core music credits

8 credits of applied music

13 credits from the following electives:

6 additional credits of music electives

All students are required to participate in either the ESU Jazz Ensemble or the ESU Pop/Jazz Singers each semester.

Music Literature and Theory Concentration (45 credits)

15 credits of core music credits

12 credits of Music Literature from the following:

4 credits of Keyboard Music Theory

8 credits of music electives

All majors are required to attend a minimum of four recitals each semester. The concerts must be varied in content and may not be one in which the student is performing.
